Weight ?

Postby Double_G » Thu Jul 26, 2012 8:36 pm

Hey how's it going, iv been away from the forum for abit work, training etc etc lol

Anyways just wondering how you guys keep the weight on your dogs whilst increasing training,iv currently got Dave on dry food mainly because I think feeding raw is alot of hassle.

Thanks Garry

Yea I have been feeding him more but he's as lean as I'd want him at the min and even with more food with higher protein he is still losing weight, should I be looking at his diet like a humans and upping carbs ?

Possibly, but there is a chance that it's just the way he is, some dogs are ripped to the max, but others aren't, but both are just as good as each other...

Have you any pics of him?

Due to the Torrential rain and iPhone camera this probably isn't the best picture, anyway this is around as lean as I want Dave to go which is were my problem is I want to increase his exercise whilst maintaining his weight, I'm all ready having problems with him shivering if out in the rain for longer then it takes him to go to the toilet.

He is looking lean!

All I can say is he's certainly looking well, does he feel hard to touch?

As for the shivering, I would put it down to the fact that he has a short coat, if you notice greyhounds and whippets shiver as well.... I wouldn't say that it's down to him being "under weight"

Cheers John,it's funny you should mention about his muscles feeling hard as his back end is hard but not his shoulders etc,are hard muscles a good or bad thing because I would relate it to tightness, should I be massaging them after a good exercise ? Sorry about all the questions but I still have quite abit to learn about conditioning.

Dogs that are under weight tend to feel soft, but if they are conditioned they will usually feel quite solid, yes you must always give a good massage after exercise, as exercise causes lactic build up which leads to muscle cramps....

Like i said his back end is solid but his front end has some give I don't no if I would say soft, allthough I have toned his exercise down again due to his weight.

I think for me to keep weight on Dave it is going to be down to giving him more of his usual food instead of adding extra protein, carbs etc do my plan is to increase his amount of food but over 4 meals instead of 2 so the portions are smaller.
